"Today, cat’s claw is promoted as a dietary supplement for a variety of health conditions, including viral infections (such as herpes, human papillomavirus, and HIV), Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, arthritis, diverticulitis, peptic ulcers, colitis, gastritis, hemorrhoids, parasites, and leaky bowel syndrome." Cat's claw, or una de gato, is a popular herbal remedy derived from the bark of Uncaria tomentosa, a woody vine native to the Amazon rainforest. It has been used traditionally by indigenous peoples for various medicinal purposes.

While scientific research on cat's claw is ongoing, some potential health benefits have been suggested:

  • Immune Support: Cat's claw is believed to have immunomodulatory properties, which means it may help regulate and support the immune system. This can potentially help the body fight off infections and diseases.
  • Anti-inflammatory Effects: Compounds found in cat's claw, such as alkaloids and flavonoids, have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in some studies. This could make it beneficial for conditions involving inflammation, such as arthritis or inflammatory bowel diseases.
  • Antioxidant Activity: Cat's claw contains antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress in the body. By neutralizing free radicals, these antioxidants may protect cells from damage and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular disease.
  • Joint Health: Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, cat's claw has been investigated for its potential benefits in promoting joint health and relieving symptoms of arthritis. Some studies suggest it may help reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.
  • Digestive Support: Traditional use of cat's claw includes treating digestive disorders such as gastritis, ulcers, and colitis. While more research is needed, some studies have suggested that cat's claw may have gastroprotective effects and could help support digestive health.
  • Neuroprotective Effects: There is some preliminary evidence to suggest that cat's claw may have neuroprotective properties, which could be beneficial for brain health. It may help protect against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain.
  • Antimicrobial Activity: Cat's claw has been investigated for its antimicrobial properties, which may help fight off bacterial and viral infections. This could potentially make it useful as a natural antibiotic or antiviral agent.

It's important to note that while cat's claw shows promise as a natural remedy, more research is needed to fully understand its efficacy and safety. As with any herbal supplement, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before using cat's claw, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications.

Cat's claw can and usually is combined with other herbal supplements such as echinacea, astragalus, turmeric, milk thistle, olive leaf extract, ginger, ashwagandha, Green tea, mushrooms, and quercetin. The combination of cat's claw and other herbals can strengthen some of the shared benefits or bring other much-needed benefits to the mix.
